Prior to the January 2017 I did know who DAY6 was but I’d never really gone out of my way to listen to their stuff. At the start of the year I had been trying new things on my YouTube channel by reacting to groups/things that I didn’t normally – queue DAY6 I Wait. As soon as I heard that song I knew I was hooked and almost immediately after reacting to the MV I went and bought every single DAY6 album I could find. And the rest – they say – is history!
As you could probably tell from the title of the albums, I Wait was released as their new title song on 6 January 2017. I do have a lot to say about this particular group being slept on a lot but I do really enjoy the concept that they’ve had going for them this year.
Every 6th of the month they come out with a new mini album – usually a 2-songed release. Although I can’t help but be worried they’re working overly hard this year, the fact they’ve been coming out with new songs every month makes me so happy as a fan. One of the main reasons for this is because I tend to like their B-sides more than their title tracks. But for January, I Wait was definitely my favourite. Actually, if I’m going to be honest I Wait has been my favourite DAY6 release in 2017.
The song starts off with Jae singing in a more delicate way than any of their previous songs. It’s a great way to start off the song as Jae’s voice matches really well with the calm instrumentation in the background. Wonpil’s voice is high-pitched and it did take me a while to get used to his voice and start to appreciate his unique tone. Now that it’s been eleven months I’m proud to say that I love his voice a lot!
Young K – oh Young K – has this ability to make me weak. I don’t know if its (superficial, I know) his face, his strong vocal tone or the fact that he raps AND sings or that he has a lot to do with the songwriting of their songs, but he is my bias in DAY6. Clearly. I tend to always look and listen out for him in every song but in I Wait I was left breathless by everything about him. From his blue hair to his clothes and just his general attitude in this MV. Everything about him screamed confident and cocky and you can really tell just by the tone in his voice.
I don’t know if I’d say his is my favourite in the group but Sungjin’s voice gives me the occasional goosebumps more than any other member. I think it’s totally because of how suited to rock his voice is – I can’t see him singing any other genre. The way he can sing in his normal register but then go a little harder and rip out this husky and purely powerful voice the next second gives me chills.
This song is about being in a one-sided relationship. You are left hanging in the wind and waiting for your partner to either make a decision and act on it or just to end things. It’s a really cool dynamic of a relationship to sing about and I think the boys did fabulously executing it.
I do have another favourite DAY6 from 2017 which is How Can I Say which features a stronger rock vibe than their previous 2017 releases. At the time of both these releases I did prefer their more rock-based songs but now it’s been almost a year I’m starting to really appreciate their slower ballad-type songs more.
