I’m a little all over the place when it comes to RED VELVET. On one hand, I love some of their stuff but on the other I have no opinion to the rest of it – mostly their B-sides. In saying that, I’m a ‘new to girl groups’ kinda girl. I come from a history of only following boy groups to broadening my K-Pop intake by paying attention to girl group releases. But RV tends to be one of the groups I really pay attention to due to their more R&B releases (Bad Boy, PeekABoo, Dumb Dumb and Automatic are some of my favourites). This doesn’t take away from their lighter more pop-sounding songs (Rookie, Russian Roulette and Red Flavour) which tend to be bangers that grow on me in a massive way.
From the teasers, this song looked like it was going to be more pop sounding. Historically speaking, RV alternates between R&B and lighter pop releases with each new comeback which is both refreshing and something they do really well – their marketing is really good when they offer two different vibes. So walking into this MV, I’m prepared to not enjoy it at first listen.
From the get-go, this MV is extremely colourful and bright and has a light and playful sound. I don’t want to focus too much on the look of the MV because they always fly over my head a little bit – so much happening and I don’t know what it all means. The MV does have similarities to “Red Flavour” as well.
I enjoy how the playful sound at the start dies away in the verses and picks up again in the chorus. For some reason, the sound in the chorus reminds me of an arcade machine or something similar. The chorus is also really catchy, the kind of catchiness that only RED VELVET offers when they comeback with their pop sound.
I really enjoy the break down after the second chorus. I’m unsure whether it’s the bridge or not because it is quite long. But I enjoy the change of the melody and the music – it’s my favourite part of their songs: the breakdowns.
What I assumed this song was going to be ended up happening. The song is so light and happy and absolutely perfect for summer. While I did mention earlier that I do prefer their more R&B sound, this song I like immediately.
My rating: 7/10
