I’m not going to pretend I know the ins and outs of this duo – all I know is they formed after their participation on Produce 101 Season 2 and have released a few tracks since the show ended. I’m still a little on the fence about whether I enjoy what the boys have done up to date but I’m hoping I would’ve made up my mind after the next few posts which are purely MXM reviews.
Immediate, I enjoy the bright colours and the playful music – as well as the catchiness of the phrase ‘Ya Ya Ya’. The song also has a fusion of pop with elements of funk – I personally really like the break down in the prechorus.
The rappers voice is nice but I would like if he went a little harder (purely personal preference) but I really like the cadence of the singers voice. I’d be interested in hearing what his voice is like when he uses his full chest.
While I don’t remember their other songs off the top of my head I can already tell this song is one of the best they’ve done so far. The catchiness of the chorus is light and fun not differing too far from the qualities of the verses.
The break down for the bridge is cute and adds a little more of a childish approach to the song. Once the last chorus comes in, the change in instrumentation isn’t lost on me. I do like how the songs shows a little progression but didn’t stray too far from the start of the song.
Overall, this song is fun and light. I liked how the MV seemed to be well distributed amongst both members and I was able to see how the two differed voice-wise. The choreography was also really cute – it wasn’t too intense for such a funky song but it also wasn’t too lack lustre. I do, however, wish there was a solid rap section or more melody progression to the song. But overall, it was ok.
My rating: 6.5/10
