I’m not going to lie and say SuJu is one of my favourite groups, nor am I going to say I particularly enjoy their music. Honestly speaking – I’m just not a fan of SUPER JUNIORs sound. I do know their bigger hits and I of course acknowledge what they have done for the industry. The music is just not really my kind of thing. But what I do love are the members. Without liking their music, Eunhyuk and Heechul were very strong biases. But with their recent comebacks over the last year Yesung and Donghae came charging at me so now I don’t know what to do with myself. Watching this MV is going to be painful for me, I can tell.
Hopefully I wasn’t too confusing with that opening paragraph and I’m hoping you understand where I’m coming from. It’s entirely possible to like the members and not the music. It doesn’t happen very often for me because there’s bound to be a song in the groups back catalogue that makes me get more involved – this has yet to happen with SUPER JUNIOR. For some reason, I feel like this song will be it. The album preview SM posted before the MV release actually sounded really good and I’m looking forward to listening to that (an album review will definitely be coming up soon).
Before I look at the MV I do want to apologise for both how long it’s been since I posted here but also for how late this review is from the actual comeback date. A combination of laziness, tiredness and life tend to kick me in the face sometimes which renders complete inability to do anything other than eat and sleep. So I’m sorry. I also have a lot of things I need to watch and listen to with posts on here to go along with them so expect a lot of content flying at you over the next week. Hopefully by that time I would’ve caught up with everything I needed to.
So, now that that’s out of the way, time to put myself through a little bit of pain…
Straight away, this sounds light and happy with some nice colour palette choices to match. Donghae running his hand through his hair almost ended me though so I’m genuinely petrified for what’s going to happen once we cross the 8 second threshold.
I really like the heightened bass in the verses though I’m a little confused at Eunhyuk’s autotune. I’ve spoken before about my love/dislike of autotune but due to it being used so early in the song I can’t really formulate an opinion at the moment. But I do love his blue hair.
The styling in this MV is nice as their outfits change between shots (as well as location) with a suave more adult outfit and the other being a brighter more childlike concept. I think both kind of work but I’m a sucker for the collared shirts and the grown up approach to such a light concept – the contrast is actually really cool.
I don’t think the word ‘childlike’ is what they were aiming for but I can’t help but use it. There’s just something about the lightness of the song mixed with their adorable faces when they’re in shots together. It just screams the occasional ‘CHILDLIKE’ to me which I’m ok with.
I can’t help but cringe a little inside at the odd dance move in the chorus but I also can’t deny it’s catchiness. I can’t decide whether the pre-chorus or actual chorus is my favourite, maybe the whole thing is, but it’s clear theres some autotune in it as well which doesn’t actually bother me too much. It’s not a prominent feature and also doesn’t over power either of their voices yet it links to the first verse.
Donghae was really doing the most in this MV and it was difficult for me to not focus on him. Overall, the song was alright but I did like it more than I thought I would. The autotune didn’t bother me at all and I was happy they didn’t entirely depend on it and actually had a pretty decent and catchy hook to the song. I’m really looking forward to listening to the album and I’m hoping I walk away from the album being a bigger fan than where I started.
