I have never reviewed LOONA on this blog before so I’m very excited for both this MV but also the album. I’m not going to lie and say I know the members names or their entire back catalogue but there have been some really good releases I’ve been able to catch from their units pre-debut. I also really enjoy their concept as a group and how the members have all slowly been drip-fed to us.
I am a massive fan of “FavOriTe”, a song I was unaware wasn’t their official debut at the time. When I realised it was another pre-debut song, I was a little upset – the entire vibe and direction of that song was ticking every single box for me. In saying that, I am interested to see what this song is like.
I have mentioned before that title songs and b-side songs are very different so I am excepting “Hi High” to be a lot more poppy and light than what their previous releases were. I don’t know how I feel about that yet as I’m not overly fond of the hyper-feminine concepts but seeing as I’m just genuinely interested in what LOONA is about, I’ll keep an open mind.
Straight away, this song is using high-pitched synths before a fast clap-percussion is introduced. This is exactly what I thought would happen. Crazy light, poppy yet super catchy. I enjoy the momentary beat change in the prechorus though I’m a bit iffy on the actual chorus. Usually when I’m on the fence with a song, it changes after the third or fourth listen so I’m sure this will be the same.
It is nice to see the girls having their official debut finally and the amount of members will always surprise me when they all dance together. The choreography is cute and seems like it would be easy for fans to join in.
I do have to say, the phrase “Hi High” is a little annoying but by the end of the song that kind of disappears. I’m also not too sure what the heck happens in the music video – so they’re flying? Or time travelling? I’m not sure, but I live for it regardless.
I feel the way I thought I would after first look – I still prefer “FavOriTe” more but totally understand why they chose this one for their official debut. Aside from the occasional annoyances, this song wasn’t too bad. The negatives I find are purely based off my own personal tastes and previous grievances I’ve had with girl groups in the past. But believe me, I am getting better and I am liking girl groups more and more as time goes on – so don’t be too hard on me.
I’m excited to hear the album in its entirety and also to dance along to “FavOriTe” in my seat.
