While I wasn’t into K-Pop when WONDER GIRLS were still active and thriving, my affection for SUNMI is ridiculous. I’m also not overly familiar with her older solo songs but do know of them enough to name them when I hear. My knowledge of SUNMI was through “Gashina”. I don’t know whether I should slap myself on the wrist for being so late to the WG/SUNMI train but I’m here now. And loving every second of what she has to give.
One of the first things I noticed about SUNMI is her ability to straddle the line of cute and sexy which she executes perfectly. Honestly, when it comes to all female celebrities (not just Korean but Western as well) I have a type I’m naturally drawn to – dark hair, pale skin, red lips. And no, that’s not me being racist. As someone who went to art school, stark and contrasting colours like red, white and black together naturally draw my eye. Anyway, in saying that – SUNMI is my type of lady.
When you add in her singing and dancing ability, this woman cannot be stopped.
“Gashina” and “Heroine” have been two of my absolute favourite songs from a soloist and it’s due to the catchy and theatrical (specifically featured in “Heroine”) music SUNMI brings out. I love it. I love her. And I can’t wait to see her tear this up as well.
“BLESS YOU!” is all I can say before the music starts. When it does, I’m immediately given the creeps as the hand in the bathtub matched with the haunting music created an ambiance I’m not comfortable with. But a strong retro sound is also brought in which isn’t usually a sound I enjoy yet I do enjoy it here.
The chorus comes in really nice and not too different from the verses. SUNMI’s typical borderline hilarious choreography is so perfect to what I expect from her. When I refer to her choreo as hilarious it is a compliment. Usually when I say this I’m implying that if anyone other than her did it, it would look ridiculous. The only other singer I’ve said this about is Beyonce, so does that example help?
The bridge is a little weird to me due to its drastic change in music but I can’t find it in myself to dislike it.
With lyrics like “Get away from my face” I’m done. If there were any five words I want to repeat for the rest of my life it’s these ones. So much sass, so much attitude. I liked this song a lot which is surprising considering my usual on-the-fence stance I have when theres a strong retro feel in a song. But I walked away from this song singing along and wanting to rewatch it all over again.
