I am over the moon excited for KNKs comeback. I’ve been a fan of them since they steamrolled me with their debut track “Knock” and I’ve been rooting for them ever since. While I’m not knee-deep into this group, I do know they had a tough 2018 so I’m happy they were able to come back at the start of 2019 with a bang!
As I just mentioned, KNK have had a hard time in 2018. For those who are unaware, member Youjin left in April 2018 due to a panic disorder and the rest of the members left YNB Entertainment in September 2018 – though I’m not entirely sure who they’re with now, the different websites I looked at all said different things. They also added a new member to the group, Dongwon, this past December. Clearly, they’ve had a tough go of it!!
In saying that, I’m so super excited to hear even one song after a year and a half since their last official release and these babies have given us three! I have already heard “Lonely Night” which I will touch on more when I get to the review but can i just say… WHAT AN AMAZING WAY TO COME BACK!
Fun fact: this album is still not on Spotify…. so I signed up to Apple Music purely for this album. No lies. So now I have both Spotify Premium and Apple Music. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch up on songs quicker now rather than having to wait for weeks for them to be on Spotify. Or Spotify could pick up their game a little….
ALBUM: Lonely Night
KNKs much anticipated comeback Lonely Night was released on 7 January 2019 with title track “Lonely Night”. Because it is a single album release it only has three tracks – all three are very much appreciated by me as I was expecting the worst considering how quiet they’ve been for such a long time. There was no need for me to be so scared as the things which drew me in to this group of giants in the first place is very much evident with this new title track.
“Lonely Night” is exactly what I wanted yet had no idea I was feeling that way. Honestly, it’s like this concept was made for them and their dapper suits and impossibly long legs – this song radiated classic masculinity to me. The moments of deep voices and the great vocals left me winded, the pre-chorus makes me lose it every time I hear it. The chorus wasn’t too hectic and stayed true to the rest of the song. In fact, I feel like the chorus is what made me think this is their best song to date. The MV was also really nice with some great use of light and shadows and great choreography moments. Dongwon’s voice also freaked me out when I first heard it – like, WHAT?! It’s a great tone to have in an already great group!
Second track “What Do You Think?” is a ballad I’ve been wanting to hear from KNK. I like the simple piano intro and the breakdown in the chorus where almost all music has been stripped away. Even when the music picks back up I’m not taken out of the vibe at all and enjoy the moments of harmony from the vocals. I’m not entirely sure of who sings when but the deep voice in this song, I’m assuming it’s Dongwon, is great. I love how relaxed the song is and I can for sure see myself relaxing after a tough day to this one.
Last track “Day By Day” felt like it was going to another ballad but it picks up fairly quickly as soon as the first verse starts. It is still slow though yet clearly shows it’s stylistic differences with the previous two tracks – it’s almost a hybrid of the two. I like this song as well and is a bit more intense than the other tracks. It has moments of giving me flashbacks to “Sun, Moon, Star” closer to the end of the song which is pulling at all kinds of heartstrings for me.
I think it’s fair to say “Lonely Night” is my favourite song from this single album purely because of the visual accompaniment the MV offers. The other two songs are really good as well and I’m finding it hard to pick one over the other. All three songs are so cohesive and their existence amongst each other makes 100% sense, the only drawback I can see is that it’s not a full album. In saying that, I’m super proud of these boys for coming through such a tough time, I also hope Youjin is doing well in regards to his health and that they’re all still in contact with each other. I welcome Dongwon to the group and the limelight – his voice fits so well with the rest of them and when watching their live stages I couldn’t tell he hasn’t been doing this since 2016.
I’m not going to rate this single album purely because of how short it is – I feel like it wouldn’t be fair. But to give you some kind of reference… I bought this album off iTunes as soon as I finished listening to it so…. that should let you know how much I love!
